Raffaele
Ponti
Music Director, Conductor
We are fortunate to have Raffaele Ponti as conductor and music director for
the Genesee Symphony Orchestra! He has a well-deserved international reputation
for his skill and enthusiasm, and his wide range of experience brings great music.
Raffaele is passionate about music and conducting and that passion shines through
when he steps onto the podium...a living embodiment of "connecting people to the
symphony and the symphony to the people, no matter what the age or orchestral
series" - his personal motto. A dynamic personality with excellent people skills
makes him a favorite with everyone - orchestra, audience, board members and sponsors.
His commitment to excellence is evident throughout his performances. By connecting so magically with audiences, Ponti focuses their attentiveness and
quietness in a way that is remarkable. His deep knowledge of repertoire is reflected in outstanding programming. He is entering his ninth season as a regular guest conductor with the Austin Symphony Orchestra, where he has helped introduce over 200,000
young people to symphonic music.
David Kim, Concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra, says, "Maestro Ponti is first and foremost, a wonderful and natural musician. His conducting technique is simple, clear, and uncluttered with mannerisms. He is extremely generous of spirit and is a sympathetic accompanist. I also find Maestro Ponti to be efficient in his use of rehearsal time."

"Playing under Ponti is very demanding, but also great fun," a longtime GSO musician says. "He is extremely knowledgeable, charismatic and an excellent musician. He knows what he’s talking about, what he wants from us, and how to get it. We work hard to be the best musicians and the best orchestra we can be - but we also enjoy it tremendously." If the last few years’ audiences are any indication, it’s working!
